My story with English
My name is Nabila Boukri. I am an English teacher and a teacher trainer.
My first contact with English was when I was five. I had a lot of fun learning the alphabet and numbers from my elder sister.
At the age of thirteen, I had an excellent teacher of English at school. She made me love this language so much that I decided to study it later at university and become a teacher in a middle school soon after graduation.
Being a novice teacher, I lacked many teaching techniques which I needed to offer good quality teaching to my students. In 2009, I had an opportunity to be trained by the British Council on a programme sponsored by Anadarko and requested by the Ministry of National Education. During the training, I heard that the British Council was offering free Saturday workshops to teachers of English in Algiers. I enrolled in the course immediately and then attended the sessions regularly; despite the fact that the distance from Batna to Algiers is about 450 km.
I remember I was trying out all the ideas and tips I had acquired in my lessons, reflecting upon them and adopting them as to make them fit my students’ learning context and culture. Since then, my classes have become more interesting and my students’ competencies in English have noticeably increased.
Moreover, I have been involved in many training activities whose objectives are to gain more knowledge and share expertise with colleagues. For example, I did my CELTA course in order to become a qualified teacher, cascaded British Council training programmes in Batna, trained teachers from other towns such as Tlemcen and Constantine, and I am now delivering the British Council Saturday workshops in my local town.
Now when thinking back to what I have achieved through English, I can say that this language has opened the door of learning and development widely to me. Besides becoming a capable teacher and teacher trainer, I have been very useful to both my students as well as my colleagues and I will still continue to be so!
Nabila Boukri.
